Performance Company: 2021/22 Season
Only 30 spots available for the 2021/22 season!
GDSC’s newest addition is tailored for students who not only look to advance, but who also have a passion to perform! Our Performance Company provides committed dancers various training and performance opportunities. Thus far, our company has participated in Disneyland’s Performing Arts OnStage, a performance at the 2019 Blazers vs. Pelicans game and 2020 Blazers vs. Magic game, as well as a 45-minute performance on the waterfront at Portland Rose Festival’s City Fair, June 2019
For 2021/22, GDSC is currently looking into a Disneyland performance opportunity through Dance the Magic, as well as more local experiences. Stay tuned for official information regarding next year’s scheduled workshops and dance-related opportunities in Bend, Portland and/or Eugene. (For financial assistance, fundraising options will be available starting the beginning of each dance season.)
This group currently contains six disciplines: Contemporary, hip hop, jazz, lyrical, musical theater and tap. There are two levels in contemporary; two levels in hip hop; two levels in jazz; two levels in lyrical; two levels in musical theater; and one level in tap. Company members do not need to be in all disciplines in order to be a part of the group. Many students choose one discipline to master and are still considered an integral part of our team.
Class requirements depend on what level and discipline a student is in and can be found in the current C/P agreement. (For class specifics, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.) Other requirements include summer classes: one week to review technique and one week to learn all choreography. These camps typically take place mid-end August. Stay tuned for dates. It is important that all students who are invited onto the team attend these mandatory weeks to catch up on skills after the long summer break, as well as learn ALL choreography for each discipline. Because we learn all choreography in August, performance classes are reduced to 30 minutes during both Fall and Spring sessions. Rather than learn choreography throughout the year, class time is used to establish formations and polish numbers. A reduction in time for performance classes not only helps in scheduling for those students in multiple disciplines, but also allows time on the schedule for competition classes.
To complement GDSC’s training, we host various master class workshops at the studio throughout the dance year. We are thrilled to be partnered with CLI Studios, a technology-based company that makes it possible for studios across the globe to train with high-profile master dancers virtually!
Students who are part of GDSC’s Performance Company will need to sign an agreement that is non-negotiable. This agreement includes information on dates, fees, as well as class, workshop and event requirements. If you would like to review a copy of our Competition Team Agreement, please contact admin.
***Each Competition Team and Performance Company discipline will learn the same choreography for each level. (Choreography between programs will only vary in formations and dance length.) This is to accommodate students who would like to participate in both programs, as costuming fees can add up. In this way, we are keeping to one costume per level of each discipline within both programs. In addition to costuming, Competition and Performance students will need to purchase a team jacket. Check it out here! Price is subject to change.***
Throughout the month of April, all interested students (current and incoming) will audition in GDSC’s technique classes (hip hop, jazz and/or tap). Students interested in hip hop are required to participate in a hip hop technique class for the month of April. Students interested in contemporary, jazz, lyrical and/or musical theater are required to participate in a jazz technique class for the month of April. Students interested in tap are required to participate in a tap technique class for the month of April. Please scroll to the bottom of this web page to see our technique class schedule.
As we only have time to address one jazz and one lyrical combination Week Three (see process below), the disciplines of contemporary and musical theater will be auditioned in class or via video submission. If you are interested in auditioning for contemporary and/or musical theater, please connect with Assistant Director Kelly Sullins via email at email@example.com) Please note: GDSC’s jazz technique portion of the audition process is still required, as it does address complementary aspects of the aforementioned disciplines.
Students (current and incoming) unable to make any portion of the audition process, please see our absence procedure below.
The audition process will be as follows:
Week One (Practice): Staff will provide all students with documents that lay out important criteria to practice, i.e., technical elements that have been addressed throughout the year. Students will spend their time practicing this list in preparation for Week Two.
Week Two (Audition): Staff will orchestrate across-the-floor combinations that encompass practiced skills from the week previous and judge those skills accordingly.
Week Three (Practice): Students will learn and practice a staff-choreographed combination.
Week Four (Audition): The combination from Week Three will be auditioned to be instructor-, peer- and self-assessed. The current technique class instructor will be the principle assessor.
Students who are enrolled in the auditioning tech class but not interested in auditioning will be included in the audition process, as GDSC considers this workshop-style curriculum a great learning experience for all.
All students (incoming and current) who are absent for any part of the audition process throughout the month of April will need to schedule a private audition at $1/minute, 60 minutes maximum. Attendance is highly suggested to avoid this fee.
