Creative Movement

Creative Movement is a dance, learning and play class for ages 3 and 4.  It is set in a warm, supportive, loving environment where beginning jazz, ballet and movement skills are taught while also engaging in play. Creative Movement helps develop motor skills and listening skills as well as helping to prepare for a classroom structure.  In this class, students will meet wonderful friends and create lasting memories.

Leaps and Turns

A class designed specifically for the serious dancer who wishes to perfect and refine their skills of turning, jumping, and leaping. These classes are taught with an emphasis on technique and correct body placement. They are taught in a progressive manner beginning with the basic and then advancing to high-level skills and combinations.

Lyrical dance is very similar to ballet, combining the many technical elements of classical ballet with the freedom, fluidity expressiveness and other aspects of jazz, contemporary and modern dance.  Lyrical dance is expressive, simultaneously subtle and dynamic, focused on conveying musicality and emotion through movement.

Jazz dancing is a fast and energetic type dance. It can be performed with any type of upbeat music from rhythm-and-blues to rock-and-roll, and anything in-between! Jazz dance consists of learning basic turns and steps while incorporating the individual choreographers style.

Musical Theater

Musical Theater is a type of Jazz Dance that uses Broadway or showtune music.  The style of dance is of that which you would see in a musical theater production with an emphasis on jazz technique.  Musical Theater is a very fun and high energy style that requires the student to not only dance, but also sometimes sing, as they play a role and find a character while they dance and entertain!

Pointe  is the part of classical ballet technique that concerns pointe work, in which a ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet. A dancer is said to be en pointe when the dancer's body is supported in this manner, and a fully extended vertical foot is said to be en pointe when touching the floor, even when not bearing weight.

A classical and artisitc dance form characterized by grace and precision of movement set to music using precise and highly formalized sets of steps, positions, poses and gestures. Ballet is often a  theatrical presentation of group or solo dancing to a musical accompaniment, usually with elaborate costume and scenic effects, conveying a story or theme.

Tap dance is a form of dance characterized by using the sound of one's tap shoes hitting the floor as a percussive instrument.  Two major variations on tap dance exist: rhythm tap and Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses more on the choreography of the dance. It is widely performed as a part of a musical theater production. Rhythm tap focuses more on musicality, and most often, improvisation either solo or within a group.  GD also offers Lyrical Tap, incorporating a lyrical style of dance into the tap routine and Funk Tap, incorporating the elements of funk and hip hop!

Hip Hop

Hip-hop dance refers to street dance styles primarily performed to hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of hip-hop culture. It includes a wide range of styles primarily breaking, locking, and popping. What distinguishes hip-hop from other forms of dance is that it is often "freestyle" (improvisational) in nature. Hip Hop is a very high energy style of dance, both with the extreme physicality of the moves and the intensity of the music.

Break Dance

Breakdancing is a form of dance that falls under the sub category of Hip Hop. It has a large focus on fast movements that are  gymnastics-inspired flips and turns, along with rapid acrobatic moves in which different parts of the body touch the ground.  It is very fast paced and athletic, and is most often performed to high energy rap, hip hop or R&B music.  It requires strength, flexibilty, and exteme athleticism.

Contemporary dance is a compilation of different techniques based from modern dance, taking the rules of Jazz Dance, then breaking them. Contemporary dance requires an emotional connection with the dancer and the piece.  Improvisational dance skills are often used in a contemporary dance form, where each dancer uses whatever they feel at that moment to express the mood of the dance piece itself.

Acro is a form of dance that combines lyrical, traditional and contemporary forms of jazz with gymnastics, tumbling, and acrobatic partner stunts. This class builds strength, flexibility and endurance. (Students should be prepared to do strength, conditioning, and stretching classes that are required.)

Company Classes

Company Classes are designed for the serious dancer who trains in all styles of dance and who perform at a competition level. These students attend various dance conventions and competitions throughout the dance year.
